To help grow and promote local tourism, the communities in the Nechako Lakes area are eligible to receive funding towards marketing and development projects. Eligible communities include: Vanderhoof ($6,500), Burns Lake - ($9,200), Fort St. James ($9,200) and Houston ($3,800).

SD 91 presents its case for a loan

Representatives of the School District 91 Business Company came to make their case to the Fort St. James mayor and council on Wednesday, June 22. The business company is asking the mayors and councils of the School District 91 (SD 91) area to help them raise the initial capital to create B.C. certified offshore schools in China, which would then make money for the school district and help fund schools within the SD 91.

New projects could help bring stability to the forest sector in north-central B.C., using wood biomass now being burned along roadsides or in beehive burners. Western BioEnergy Inc. is awaiting a decision on their proposed BC BioEnergy Network which would include three biomass-fired, electricity generating stations, one in Burns Lake, one in Merritt and one in Fort St. James.

Rustad optimistic about rural prospects

With his position on a committee called a rural caucus, Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad sees good things ahead. “The technology that’s available now opens up a world of possibility in terms of how small or remote areas can improve the services that are offered.” Video conferencing technology will be used to improve rural education and health care and will bring higher-level services normally only available in larger urban centres to rural communities.
